Municipal tax professionals are required to translate complex legislation into conversations that people can understand and appreciate — often when emotions are running high. At the same time, internal communication across departments, leadership changes, and municipalities can present their own challenges, requiring critical communication and adaptation skills that help foster positive outcomes. This session builds communication skills to improve clarity, confidence, and professionalism across a broad spectrum of interactions and relationships. Participants will learn how to: De-escalate emotionally-charged conversations with the public Communicate decisions clearly, firmly, and compassionately Navigate conflict respectfully and collaboratively with colleagues and other departments Reduce “us vs. them” dynamics between roles or teams Use tone and language that builds trust while maintaining boundaries

Best for: All staff levels, especially public-facing and cross-department roles
